Patrol is building an AI native accessibility platform for e-commerce, starting with Shopify merchants, to make the rails of commerce run better for all. Their platform helps small businesses and emerging enterprises become ADA compliant by automating auditing, user-testing, and custom software development work.

Early in his career, Sam Rotner worked in ecommerce sales at Privy as one of their top reps. He saw an overlooked pain point merchants often experienced in the form of web accessibility compliance. After Privy’s acquisition by Attentive, Sam joined OpenView focused on everything self-serve and PLG which included the Shopify ecosystem and ecomm related sub-verticals similar to ADA compliance

Web accessibility isn’t just about user experience. It comes with legal liability. In 2024 alone, more than 10,000 ADA lawsuits and demand letters were filed in the U.S. over inaccessible websites, mostly targeting small-to-mid-sized ecommerce brands. And that number is likely underreported. Many demand letters quietly settle for tens of thousands of dollars.

Global e-commerce has surpassed $6T and more than 2.7B people shop online globally (src). The Shopify ecosystem alone counts 2.6M stores and GMV is approaching $300B (src). That’s a lot of moolah and accessibility demands will only grow. Almost 20% of the U.S. population has a reported disability – that’s 50M+ Americans! (src).

Sam teamed up with MIT engineering leader Nico van Wijk to build a scalable solution that could solve this thorny, ongoing, expensive problem served by outdated incumbents who didn’t (or couldn’t) serve the long tail of ecommerce. The market deserves a better solution.

Outside of the enterprise where consulting teams serve the high end of the market, tech enabled service vendors serve lower enterprises & the mid market with overlay widgets that really only cover 20-30% of accessibility violations and can cost anywhere from a few thousand a year for businesses just getting started to $20k+ annually for DTC / CPG brands as they start to see traction. An AI innovator’s dream, while making a positive impact!

With an AI powered approach and multi-agent workflows, Patrol is building a system that audits, tests, and deletes inaccessible code and adds accessible code directly to a brand’s codebase.. Patrol is built for ecommerce brands, where use cases include alt text generation, fixing button and link names, adding ARIA labels, etc. Developers can see a diff-check and merge changes directly to GitHub through the Patrol app. Non-technical Heads of Ecommerce or Brand owners can also simply select violations and create an accessible theme with the underlying code changes in a few clicks!

Their team is building a platform that can easily handle messy front ends, rogue development patterns, cowboy developers, or one-off fixes without breaking a site. Most importantly, Patrol monitors ongoing compliance like a CI/CD workflow. New product launch or an update to your store? Patrol re-audits and sends an email. It’s SOC 2-style automation applied to ADA law.

Since launching in January 2025, Patrol has already landed dozens of customers, ranging from high-growth Shopify brands doing a few million in sales to $100M+ in GMV. They’ve crossed six figures in revenue, are currently adding 5-10 great brands a month, and haven’t yet turned on a single GTM resource.

The rest of 2025 is all about nailing the product experience and then 2026 will be about scaling. Hiring is currently focused on Customer Success and Partnerships with demand generation to follow. Patrol recently moved into its own office in Kendall Square, where their team is working away to fulfill their vision to become one of Boston’s next great ecommerce software companies.

Patrol is proudly Boston-backed by NextView (who led their Pre-Seed round) with more great Boston firms around the hoop !If you’re in Kendall Square looking to learn more, stop by or e-mail Sam at [email protected].

Operators to Know:

My investigative powers continue to need work so apologies to the Patrol team if I missed any up & coming operators internally

Key Roles To Be Hired:

  •  Customer Success Lead and their first GTM hire

If I were interviewing here are some questions I’d ask:

  • What are the key milestones for Patrol to continue to grow into the enterprise?
  • What are the biggest challenges as you scale the team and GTM resources?
  • What is the long term vision for the company?
  • What are the areas outside of the Shopify ecosystem Patrol is most interested in exploring?

We’re optimizing for readability here so to learn more about Patrol you’ll have to D.Y.O.R. I’m excited to watch this team bring more Shopify stores into the age of AI. All who need accessibility applaud your efforts. See you around town!
